Your raw score (number of correct answers) for each section is converted to a scaled score using a statistical process called equating. The two scaled scores are then added together to create your composite score, which has a maximum of 700 points. There's no penalty for wrong answers, so you should answer every question.
The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) is the entrance exam for eight of New York City's nine specialized high schools. This free calculator helps students estimate their composite score by converting raw scores to scaled scores based on historical data.
The SHSAT is offered to 8th and 9th grade students each fall. The test consists of two sections: English Language Arts (ELA) with 57 questions and Mathematics with 57 questions. Your performance on each section generates a raw score that is then converted to a scaled score through a process called equating.
The eight SHSAT-based specialized high schools are: Stuyvesant High School, Bronx High School of Science, Brooklyn Technical High School, Brooklyn Latin School, High School of Math, Science and Engineering at City College, High School of American Studies at Lehman College, Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, and Staten Island Technical High School.
LaGuardia High School, the ninth specialized school, admits students based on auditions rather than the SHSAT.
